When you think of the holidays, what comes to mind? For me, and a great deal of others, it is a steady stream of snow covered movies on repeat. As the calendar reaches its final pages and November slips away, Thanksgiving rapidly approaches. The holiday looks different for everyone, some travel to see loved ones, some build new traditions, and some find themselves hosting in a space that may still feel temporary.

Robocall rings. Another unknown number. A text with a sketchy link. An email claiming you owe money you've never heard of.

But what I wasn’t prepared for, when I moved to Washington, D.C., was the warmth. The genuine hospitality that greeted me at every corner of the city took me completely by surprise.
